Cannabis is one of the safest substances known to man and provides plenty of medical benefits. While the masses would most definitely benefit from a legal marijuana system, there are some entities that are wholeheartedly against the legalization initiative.
Cannabis prohibition has been sustained by these entities for decades now, pouring in billions of dollars to maintain the policy. However, all evidence suggest that legalization is the ONLY way you'd ever diminish the power of criminal cartels. The only way to eradicate their revenue streams is by "taking it from them" in a legal manner and undercutting their profit margins.
Drug prohibition is the denial of the human condition. We as humans like to "alter our brain chemistry". We drink, we smoke, we take drugs...this is who we are.
Drug prohibition clings to the idea that "people are pure and must remain so" however, this is wholly moralistic in nature and completely wrong. Since the dawn of modern man...we have been walking around eating plants and mushrooms and expanding our knowledge of the natural world.
However that's besides the point. The bottom line: There are few people who are turning a profit on the misery of the masses. It's time we change all that!
